While being a groupie with the Soular Grooves radio show crew this past weekend I couldn’t resist shimmying with a bottom lip biting funky face to this Di Melo song. I immediately proclaimed that I wanted to learn how to speak Portuguese. My sentiments were duplicated however the reality is that most of us live busy lives and learning a new language takes time and dedication. On my end, I don’t think it is so much the language but the culture that draws me. What I gather is that Brazilians are much like the Carnaval images we see- vibrant, free, natural rhythm makers and lifelong romantics/lovers (depends on how you see it).
To those who want to get a full-on cultural immersion and live in Houston, I recommend the Brazilian Arts Foundation(BAF) in the Heights. In my brief run with this non-profit cultural center, I took Portuguese for Spanish speakers language classes and did samba on Wednesdays. Unfortunately I had to stop going due to my schedule but the experience kindled true appreciation. Had I not stopped, perhaps I would have jumped in on the capoeira and culinary class/workshop action.
Sidebar: The Brazilian Nuts band and the BAF dancers will be performing this weekend at iFest. Check them at the Center Stage.
I guess for now I can keep surrounding myself with the music and practicing my samba hip swinging- apparently one of my weak points and a slight blow to my dancer ego. This language I know already- A Linguagem da Música e Dança. If you’re with me on this, here is some music I came across while searching for Brazilian inspired sounds…

Sidebar2: I tried to add a variety of music. If you have more to add to the list, let me know and I will keep tagging more. Also, I’m new to Spotify but I think playlists can be shared externally. If so, I may switch to that format for music sharing in the future.
Tootles for now. Catch y’all at the Frida Fest opening tomorrow!
